Dive New Zealand / Dive Pacific December-January 2005 issue 85

Dive Articles: December/January 2005 100 metres to history: Technical diving is a marvellous tool. It allows us to do, see, discover and photograph things that could not be done, seen, discovered, or photographed with normal diving methods. While for some the diving appears to be the end in itself, for me and like minded colleagues, technical diving is a means to an end. World Wrecks Tour: As the little aircraft containing our group rattled towards the islands of Orkney from the Scottish mainland to the south, a spiralling low pressure system charged in simultaneously from the wild waters to the north. We arrived at the tiny island together, meaning that day one of our expedition was spent wincing and staggering in icy northern winds. Open Water - Left at Sea: It would appear that the case of Tom and Eileen Lonergan opened a genie in a bottle when they disappeared from the Great Barrier Reef in 1998. The tale of how they were left behind by the dive boat and the subsequent washing ashore of a cryptically written message on a dive slate has become an urban legend among divers worldwide. Hunting giant kingfish: Kingies find the sweet spot in front of the reef where the current hits the rock and heads straight up. They can just cruise this area slowly without working too hard. If you are there first, they might just swim right up to you, eager to be threaded straight onto your floatline. Window Cleaners Wanted: New Zealand's Milford Sound - it's like falling through dark and stormy clouds into a colourful world of clear water and strange sea creatures. The Fabulous Fans of Fiji: Tropical paradise. Shark Wrangling: Kelly Tarlton's style. Great Barrier for Great Diving: Where hunting, fishing, diving and the outdoors overshadows all else. Sharks and Sunken Ferries: Group thinking took over. Next there was a cluster of four divers on the anchor rope. We Dived for River Gold: As I cleared the space I saw several small nuggets of gold. We had, at long last, found some reward for our labours. Kalymnos Diving Festival: For centuries its culture and people have been immersed in diving and the sea. centre pullout: Diving New Zealand's Northland. MalapascuaL: One of the richest places for marine life. Five Servings a Day for Better Photos: Learning good angles, lighting and composition. Ocean Zoo: the first prime-time New Zealand made show. HMNZS Manawanui: The New Zealand Navy's diving support vessel. Marine Archaeology: the discussion continues.
