Coastal by Malcolm Francis
Reviewed by Craig Worthington. Malcolm Francis' third revision of Coastal Fishes of New Zealand will be welcomed by divers, fishers, and naturalists, alike. Not only have an additional 44 species been added but many of the old species in the second edition have been revamped with new photos and accurate revision. Malcolm's status as one of New Zealand's most well known and respected marine scientists and his exact and careful handling of all the information contained within the book, whether it be in reference to fish distribution, biology, or taxonomy, make this edition a must have for anyone who ventures near salt water. Scientific acuity aside the book has an attractiveness and simplicity of format that has ensured it remains a top selling fish identification guide. It is the sort of publication quite at home on any coffee table and one that quickly stimulates conversation. The photographic illustrations are extremely good and chosen for the clear images. This latest edition has a big increase in rare sub-tropical species and deeper water species. Some may question their inclusion but with the scope of the book attempting to cover fishes that may be encountered in diving depths from Kermedec Islands in the north to Campbell Island in the south then you're going to have to include many species that your average diving/fishing citizen is never going to see. And this is the value of the book. Northern fishers are going to relish the inclusion of Northern Kahawai (Arripis xylabion), Poor Knight Islands addicts are going to enthuse over the colourful shots of sub-tropical fishes that can appear around those shores, and many an Auckland diver is going to be left contemplating a dive in the deep south when they see the exquisite new photos of the thornfish, yellow weever, and dark toadfish. I know for a fact that this book will quickly be snapped up by piscophiles around the world. Ensure you get yourself a copy. Soft cover, 103 pages, full colour, 17x25
