Three Gray’s beaked whales die

Three rare whales died after becoming stranded on New Zealand’s far north east coast beach of Taupo Bay, 20km east of Mangonui. They were among a small pod of five Gray’s beaked whales. Volunteers and members of the Far North Whale Rescue, managed to help two whales out to sea but two adult females and a juvenile died. Mita Harris, DoC Bay of Islands programme manager for biodiversity, said both dead female whales were about five to six metres long and each weighed an estimated 1.5 tonnes. The juvenile was washed away in strong tidal currents.
