Proposed scuba diving ban

The South African government in an attempt to eradicate poaching of perlemoen (abalone) has announced plans to ban scuba diving along much of the Cape Coast of South Africa. Diving equipment such as underwater breathing gear, masks, fins, and snorkels will be banned. Recreational divers are extremely unlikely to be involved in illegal poaching and this blanket ban is punishing divers who only want to enjoy the amazing marine life in the area. The Cape Coast of South Africa is renowned for its abundant shark diving opportunities and is considered one of the best places in the world for Great White Shark encounters. If the ban is implemented it will devastate recreational diving and dive tourism in South Africa.
