Phoenix Islands protected area
The Government of Kiribati has approved the final boundaries and associated regulations for the Phoenix Islands Protected Area (PIPA). This creates the worlds largest marine protected area of over 410 000 sq km. The Phoenix Island group, located in the Central Pacific near the equator mid-way between Hawaii and Fiji is one of the Earth’s last intact oceanic coral archipelago ecosystems.
