Australia heads up international efforts to protect the three biggest species of shark

The great white shark, the basking shark and the whale shark are hit hard by commercial fishing nets and long-lines targeting other species. The government will focus its by-catch prevention efforts on the big sharks at the International Convention on Migratory Species, to be held in the Seychelles in December. It will provide about A$2 million this year to help minimise by-catch and broaden protection of migratory marine species both domestically and internationally.
