Call for Beacons on fishing boats

Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt has called for new technology on fishing boats to prevent another tragedy in Foveaux Strait. Six of the nine people on board the Kotuku died when the boat capsized. The Mayor said with the modern technology available today a repeat of the capsizing when people die could be avoided. He would like to see beacons fitted to fishing vessels which would be activated automatically if a boat capsizes.
