Dolphin watching harms animalsA leading dolphin researcher has warned that the whale and dolphin watching industry is harming the animals. A six-year study of the impact of tourism on dolphins in Western Australia’s Shark Bay shows that dolphins regularly visited by people were less successful, and had a slower rate of reproduction, than dolphins not visited by humans. It is not suggested that a stop be put to whale and dolphin watching, but to indicate ways in which its impact could be minimised. Article reprints or information email DiveNZ@divenewzealand.co.nz |
