Rare whale gets beached

A Gingko-toothed beaked whale washed up in early November at Puponga in Golden Bay. Anton van Helden, Te Papa’s marine mammal collection manager (where the whale is being analysed) said it was ‘extraordinary’ and that this was only the second time one of these whales has been found on New Zealand’s shores. The whale is one of only 20 of its species that has been found in the world.
