AUSTRALIAN SCIENTISTS EXCITED ABOUT RARE SHARK FIND

Western Australian scientists are excited about finding their first extremely rare speartooth shark. The predator was caught in a remote creek near Derby 2,300km north of Perth.

Murdoch University scientist Dean Thorburn said that shark was caught more than 1,000km from the closest known recorded location - in the Adelaide River, Northern Territory.

Speartooth sharks comprise two species of the genus Glyphis, and are known from only 25 specimens taken in Queensland and the Northern Territory.
